The Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) or the Fluminense Federal University is a public university mainly located in Niterói in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It also has other infrastructures and facilities in other cities. The institution was created in 1960 as the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro through the merging of multiple Niterói colleges. It was in 1965 that it officially started going by its current name.

UFF has a rich history with a tradition of focusing its academic training on professional development. Research takes a more formal role while extension programs put emphasis on providing community services. These traditions continue to stand as the university’s pillars today.

Constantly ranked as a top 25 university in Latin America, it is recognized as one of the premier institutes of excellence in the country of Brazil. It is the third-largest federal university in Brazil and the country’s sixth-largest public university. Research projects being carried out by the university span across a wide variety of areas and disciplines. Active projects range from Artificial Intelligence and Psychology to Magnetic Molecular Material Applications.

UFF offers a total of 124 undergraduate programs on campus and has six courses available for distance learning. For professional graduate programs, the university offers about 143 on-campus courses, 11 distance learning courses, and 45 courses in medical residency. Also, there are 62 courses masters, 16 professional masters, and 42 doctorate academic graduate programs available.

Its three Niterói campuses are the Gragoatá Campus, Praia Vermelha Campus, and the Valonguinho Campus. Each hosts different departments. Academic units for Psychology, Anthropology, Mathematics, and the Social sciences are housed in the Gragoatá Campus. The Gragoatá Campus is home to the university’s engineering courses from Chemical Engineering to Civil Engineering. Moreover, this is also where courses for Public Safety, Architecture and Urbanism, and Computational Mathematics are provided. Thirdly, academic units for courses like Industrial Chemistry, Accounting Sciences, and Biological Sciences are hosted in the Valonguinho Campus.

The university also operates schools outside the three main campuses in Niterói. These include the university’s Nursing School, Medical School, Veterinary School, and Law School. Other learning and research institutes outside campus include the Biomedical Institute and the Institute of Art and Social Communication. The latter provides space, facilities, and learning and research support in the areas of Archival Science, Media Studies, Cultural Production, Advertising and Propaganda, and Journalism.

Other campuses located outside the city offer other specialized courses and some identical courses in their respective facilities. For instance, the UFF location in Miracema also offers courses in Accounting Sciences while the location in Volta Redonda offers specialized courses on Engineering for Agribusiness, among others.
