Overview

Artois University is a modern public university located in the vicinity of the smaller city of Arras, France. Founded in 1992, the university has been a major contributor to the social mobility and professional integration of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region and France as a whole. It is a dynamic institution created to foster innovative teaching and streamline the acquisition of knowledge and skills to help students solve present-day challenges.

Despite being relatively young, the university is a force to reckon with in French higher education. At present, the institution has five campuses located across the Nord-Pas de Calais region—Arras (the main campus), Lens, Béthune, Liévin, and Douai. These campuses are created to give students a friendly and stimulating study environment.

The campuses are home to Artois University’s eight faculties, namely Law; History and Geography Heritage Studies; Letters and Arts; Sciences; Applied Sciences; Foreign Languages; Sports and Physical Education; and Economics, Management, Administration, and Social Sciences. The university also has two institutes of Technology—Béthune Institute of Technology and Lens Institute of Technology. In addition, there are 18 approved research centers and laboratories created to foster research excellence around the fields of major interests such as artificial intelligence (AI) and environmental energy efficiency, to name a few.

Artois University offers a wide range of courses, both in initial and further education. In total, there are about 87 programs of study that are created in strict conformity with the European LMD (bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral studies). Beyond the traditional degree programs, the university offers a block-release study for students who want to complete a university course and gain work experience simultaneously. In addition, there are distance learning provisions and education programs for adults.

Artois University currently accommodates more than 11,500 students enrolled in a wide variety of courses of study. To guide them through the academic journey, the institution has employed over 1,050 teaching and administrative staff. The university also pursues a policy of international openness and has partnerships with global universities and research centers in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. These partnerships pave the way for students to participate in international exchange programs.

Being a member of the Fédération Française du Sport Universitaire, Artois University gives students the opportunity to take part in various sports activities both at the regional and inter-regional levels. Students can be part of different team sports such as football, rugby, handball, and volleyball, or join individual events such as table tennis, athletics, swimming, boxing, and gymnastics. Students who achieve remarkable results in French championships are honored and rewarded by the university around the festive and convivial event.
