Each university’s position in the ranking is determined by the cumulative D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all affiliated scholars whose primary area of publication is Social Sciences and Humanities. The D-index represents each scholar's research impact exclusively within their examined discipline by considering only publications and citations specific to Social Sciences and Humanities.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
The assessment for this ranking encompasses 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a variety of bibliometric sources. From this extensive pool, 17,050 scientists specifically contributing to the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities were analyzed. To qualify for inclusion, researchers were required to have a D-index of at least 30, with the majority of their leading publications in Social Sciences and Humanities.
The consideration of each scientist further entailed evaluation of their awards and achievements within Social Sciences and Humanities. The D-index threshold for top researchers was dynamically set in increments of 10, calibrated according to the total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring representation of the top 1% of leading scholars. Importantly, a maximum proximity of 30% between the general H-index and the discipline-specific D-index was mandated. Additionally, scientist’s awards and achievements in their area of study were factored into their inclusion and ranking.
Verification and Quality Assurance Processes
A critical component of the ranking’s credibility is stringent verification. Understanding that raw bibliometric data can never be an absolutist measure of scholarly performance, the Research.com team manually verified all scientist profiles used in this ranking. Each profile was cross-correlated against a broad spectrum of trustworthy publication sources to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
While the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a formal criterion in the ranking determination, it is acknowledged as a valuable secondary indicator of scholarly contribution in the field. Ultimately, ranking positions are established using each researcher's H-index, as extracted from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the preeminent bibliometric databases serving the global research community.
