Scope and Criteria for Research Analysis
To ensure the rigor and industry relevance of the ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles compiled from a variety of bibliometric databases were initially examined. Focusing on the discipline of Earth Science, a refined subset of 31,170 scientist profiles was subjected to detailed analysis. The qualifying D-index threshold for individual scientists was set at a minimum of 30; additionally, the majority of high-level scholarly outputs had to be in Earth Science. Consideration of scientific achievements and accolades within the field also contributed to the assessment framework.
To maintain excellence and relevance, the D-index threshold for top researchers was incrementally adjusted in steps of 10 based on the estimated population of scholars within each discipline, ensuring inclusion of the uppermost 1% of experts. Furthermore, a proximity constraint required that a scientist’s D-index not differ by more than 30% from their overall H-index, safeguarding the focus on discipline-specific impact. The comprehensive evaluation integrated peer recognition and awards, thus reinforcing a transparent and equitable selection process.
Verification Processes and Data Integrity
Acknowledging the nuanced nature of research assessment, the architects of this ranking have deployed meticulous manual verification for each scientist profile, supplementing the bibliometric data with cross-correlation against authoritative publisher records and scholarly sources. The panel recognizes that bibliometric metrics alone are insufficient as absolute measures of scholarly contribution. While publication counts in recognized journals and conferences—though not a direct ranking factor—provide important supplementary insight into researcher excellence, ranking status is grounded in the H-index values as indexed by world-leading databases OpenAlex and CrossRef. These resources represent the most advanced and widely recognized bibliometric repositories available to the research community.
