A university’s position within the ranking is determined by the aggregate D-index (Discipline H-index) of all its affiliated scholars whose principal publication area is in Biology and Biochemistry. The D-index uniquely reflects the output and citation influence within the field, incorporating only those publications and citations specific to Biology and Biochemistry, which ensures a tailored and accurate representation of scholarly excellence in this discipline.
Scope of the Research and Scholar Selection
For this edition of the ranking, 279,971 scientist profiles were meticulously identified from a suite of bibliometric data sources. Of these, 97,416 scientists specializing in Biology and Biochemistry underwent thorough analysis as part of the ranking process.
The qualifying D-index threshold for individual consideration was set at 40, ensuring that only consistently high-performing scholars, with the majority of their high-quality output situated in Biology and Biochemistry, were included. Recognizing outstanding scientific contribution, a scientist’s awards and achievements in the field were also integrated as a secondary evaluation factor.
The D-index threshold applied for selection of top researchers is incremented by 10 depending on the total population of scholars estimated for each discipline. This evolving threshold approach is designed to guarantee inclusion of the top 1% of leading global scholars in each category. Additionally, to ensure subject-specific impact, a proximity of 30% or less is mandated between a scientist's general H-index and their D-index. This ensures that recognized scholars are truly specialized in the discipline under evaluation.
Scientist’s awards and career achievements in their respective fields further inform the assessment, adding qualitative depth to the quantitative bibliometric measures.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
Research.com’s team is fundamentally aware that raw bibliometric data, while powerful, should not be the sole arbiter of a scholar's scientific contribution. Recognizing this, each scientist profile was manually verified and cross-validated against a diverse spectrum of reputable primary publication sources to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
Although not a direct ranking factor, the count of papers published in top-tier journals and conference proceedings offers an important secondary signal, underlining a scientist's ongoing contribution to the discipline and science at large.
Rankings are determined using each scholar’s H-index drawn from OpenAlex and CrossRef databases, recognized as the most comprehensive and reliable bibliometric databases accessible to the academic community. This ensures high transparency, objectivity, and reproducibility of the results.
