Data Sources and Citation-Based Metrics
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Vietnam Ranking is built on a robust foundation of data collected from internationally recognized bibliometric databases, with primary sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by a range of other credible data sources. To ensure the highest level of accuracy and timeliness, bibliometric data used for devising citation-based metrics were harvested on 2024-11-27.
A university’s position in the ranking is determined by aggregating the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranked scholars affiliated with that institution. The D-index is a discipline-specific metric that takes into account only publications and citations within a scholar’s examined field. Importantly, the ranking methodology includes scientists from all major research areas, ensuring comprehensive coverage and a holistic assessment of institutional research strength.
Scope of Research and Profile Selection
The ranking draws on an extensive and diverse dataset, examining 279,971 scientist profiles that were identified from a wide variety of bibliometric sources. These profiles span all major scientific disciplines, providing broad and inclusive representation of Vietnam’s research output. To be considered in the ranking, each scientist was required to meet a qualifying D-index threshold of 20, ensuring that only those with a significant impact in their field were included. In addition to citation metrics, scientist awards and field achievements were also factored into the evaluation, recognizing qualitative aspects of research excellence.
Additional Verification Practices
The team behind the Research.com ranking acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone should not serve as the sole measure of scholarly output. To mitigate limitations inherent in automated data collection, each scientist profile underwent manual verification and was cross-correlated with publications in a wide spectrum of established and trustworthy sources. While the number of papers a scientist publishes in leading journals and well-regarded conference proceedings is not directly included as a factor in the ranking, it is recognized as a valuable supplementary indicator of a researcher's contributions within their area of expertise.
The final position in the ranking is established on the basis of each researcher’s H-index according to data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, universally valued bibliometric databases within the global academic community.
