Leon Knopoff was affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles in the United States. Throughout their career, they were recognized by several prominent scientific organizations.

Knopoff was awarded the title of Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in 1962. The following year, in 1963, they became a Member of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1964, they were named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Later, in 1976, Knopoff was recognized as a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
