A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that isolates papers and citations strictly within the examined discipline. This discipline-specific scope ensures accuracy in evaluating a researcher’s impact where their primary contributions lie, rather than relying on general citation metrics that may span diverse fields.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
Our analysis examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a diverse array of bibliometric resources, spanning all academic disciplines. Within the specific domain of Economics and Finance, 30 Norwegian scientists were evaluated rigorously. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist's D-index was required to be at least 30, with the majority of their tier publications concentrated in the Economics and Finance areas.
Additional qualitative factors were incorporated in the assessment, such as awards and notable achievements within the field, to complement bibliometric indicators. The D-index thresholds were calibrated as increments of 10, adjusted according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, ensuring representation of the top 1% of leading researchers globally.
Moreover, careful consideration was given to ensure that a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index showed proximity within 30%. This stipulation guarantees consistency between their overall academic influence and their discipline-specific impact.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the quality and influence of scholarly work, the Research.com team undertook extensive manual verification of all scientist profiles. This process involved cross-correlating publication records against a wide range of trustworthy and authoritative sources to ensure accuracy and validity.
While not directly affecting the ranking positions, the volume of papers published in prominent journals and respected conference proceedings is considered a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions.
The ranking positions rest on the D-index values aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent bibliometric databases available to the academic community. This transparency and reliance on esteemed data sources enhance the credibility and reproducibility of the ranking.
