The position of each scientist in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only the papers and citation counts within the examined discipline of Economics and Finance. This focus allows for a precise evaluation of a researcher's impact specifically in their field of expertise, rather than relying on general citation metrics.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric data sources across all scientific disciplines. Within this broad dataset, 4,000 profiles in the discipline of Economics and Finance were specifically analyzed.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index had to be at least 30, and a majority of their tier publications needed to be in the area of Economics and Finance. Additional consideration was given to scientists’ awards and notable achievements within the field, reinforcing the ranking’s commitment to recognizing excellence in discipline-specific contributions.
The threshold D-index for consideration is dynamically set as increments of 10, calibrated according to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach is designed to ensure that the top 1% of leading experts are incorporated into the list, providing an elite and meaningful judgment of scholarly leadership. Furthermore, to maintain disciplinary relevance, a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index must be closely aligned, with a proximity of 30% or less.
Verification and Quality Assurance
Understanding the limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team undertook rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-referenced against publications from a wide spectrum of trustworthy academic venues to ensure accuracy and legitimacy of the data presented.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor in determining a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary signal reflecting a scientist’s contribution and prominence within Economics and Finance research.
In establishing ranking positions, the D-index values were sourced and calculated based on data retrieved from OpenAlex and CrossRef, underscoring the use of transparent, reputable bibliometric databases. Detailed information regarding the methodology and data handling practices can be found on our methodology page.
