Overview: Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA)
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is a public research institute founded in 2006, located in Klosterneuburg, on the outskirts of Vienna, Austria. Conceived as an autonomous, international institution, ISTA is dedicated to cutting-edge scientific research and postgraduate education in the natural and mathematical sciences. The Institute operates as a single-campus entity and, as of 2024, hosts over 1,300 scientists—including more than 80 research groups—with an exclusively PhD-level student cohort numbering approximately 300. ISTA’s establishment was driven by Austria’s ambition to create a world-class center for fundamental scientific discovery.
ISTA is recognized globally for its strength in life sciences, neuroscience, physics, mathematics, computer science, and chemistry. Its unique, interdisciplinary approach encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration and problem-driven research, eschewing traditional departmental structures. The Institute’s commitment to frontier research is evidenced by its high per-capita rate of ERC (European Research Council) grants—ranking among the top in Europe—and over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications annually. ISTA maintains robust international collaborations, including partnerships with leading institutions and joint PhD programs. Its selective, English-language doctoral program attracts a global talent pool and is fully funded, ensuring both tuition and living expenses are covered for all students.
Campus life at ISTA is shaped by a vibrant, international community representing more than 70 nationalities. The Institute offers modern on-campus housing, extensive scientific and social facilities, and a variety of student clubs and societies. Regular cultural events, scientific symposia, and outreach activities foster a stimulating and inclusive environment. Comprehensive support services support student well-being, spanning career guidance, counseling, and family services. ISTA also provides opportunities for sports, arts, and recreation, helping students maintain a healthy work-life balance and develop a strong collegial network.
ISTA’s mission is to advance basic science and train future leaders through a focus on excellence, innovation, and integrity. Strongly committed to diversity, sustainability, and global collaboration, ISTA aspires to make a lasting positive impact on society and the scientific community worldwide.
