Shanghai University (SHU) is a public research university in Shanghai, China. It was established in 1922 by both Communist and Nationalist parties. In 1994, it merged with three other universities to become the largest university in Shanghai Municipality. At present, the university has a student population of around 56,000.

Among the major rankings of young universities, SHU places first in China and is included in the top 51-60 universities in the world. Some of its popular study areas include Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences. It also belongs to the elite Project 211 list of top national universities in China.

The university is divided into five major academic divisions, namely, Fine Arts, Economics & Management, Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. It also has around 30 autonomous colleges, departments, and schools.

Its Humanities and Social Science Division, for instance, includes the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Sociology, and the School of Journalism and Communication. For one, the College of Liberal Arts offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in History, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and Chinese Language and Literature.

Likewise, under the Engineering Division, the School of Mechatronic Engineering & Automation has baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorate courses in the fields of Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Design, and Instruments & Science Technology.

In addition, the Business & Management Division offers courses in Human Resource Management, Logistics Management, and Accountancy in its School of Management. Moreover, the division’s Department of Library, Information & Archives offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Information Resources Management.

Meanwhile, the university also offers non-degree programs like China Studies, Doing Business in China, and Intensive Chinese Program. For one, the China Studies program covers various key aspects of China, including its economy, society, and politics, and is designed for local and foreign entrepreneurs intending to do business in the country.

SHU is also home to several major research centers and laboratories that focus on various key Chinese National Disciplines, such as Engineering, Hydromechanics, and Iron & Steel Metallurgy. Its major labs include the Key Laboratory of Advanced Ferrous Materials (Southern Base of National Engineering Research Center) and the National Key Laboratory of Modern Metallurgy and Materials Manufacturing.

Shanghai University Library has three libraries, the Main Library (Baoshan campus), the Wenhui Library (Yanchang campus), and the Lianhe Library (Jiading campus). Collectively, its library system has a collection of over 3 million volumes, over 4,000 periodicals, and numerous electronic resources.

Notable alumni include Yang Shangkun (4th President of the People's Republic of China),
Xin Zhou (E-House China Chairman & CEO), Scott Shaw (American writer), Li Shuoxun (revolutionary martyr), and Chen Yifei (film director).
