Overview
The University of Paderborn (Paderborn University) is a public research university founded in 1972 and based in the Rhine-Westphalia state in Germany. It ranks consistently among the world’s 50 best schools for tertiary mathematics, earning it several accolades from the European Research Council and the German Research Foundation.
Likewise, its computer science program is cited by the Germany-based Centre for Higher Education Development and Die Zeit, a national news magazine, as one of the top 3 programs in the country.
Paderborn offers more than 60 degree programs, notably in engineering, natural sciences, business and arts and humanities. It also provides teacher education programs as part of its strategy for academic excellence. To date, it enrols over 20,000 students and hosts more than 250 professors across its degree programs.
The degree programs are housed in five faculties following standard departments that consolidate related courses. For one, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities combines human sciences like philosophy, sociology and psychology in one department, while art, music and textiles are merged in another department. Taxation, accounting and finances fall under the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, which also includes business information systems, economics and law as separate departments.
Other faculties are organized around fields of study such as the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. Mechanical Engineering has its separate faculty consisting of sixteen professorships and five interdisciplinary research facilities.
The University of Paderborn is also notable for its research projects around studies in electrical engineering and computer science and systems. It is a top recipient of funds from the German Research Foundation. Among its research milestones, the university achieved a world record for optical data transmission in 2018 accomplishing 128 gigabits per second. Another research initiative, its RailCab project aims to apply linear engines to move autonomous, rail-mounted vehicles.
Other research institutes run by the university include Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing, Paderborn Institute for Scientific Computation and Cooperative Computing and Communication Laboratory.
Notable alumni include Preda Mihăilescu, who decoded the Catalan conjecture that stood unresolved for 158 years.
