Overview

Instituto Superior Técnico

Instituto Superior Técnico is (IST or Técnico) is a public research university in Lisbon, Portugal. It was founded in 1911 and became part of the Technical University of Lisbon. It is the largest school of science and technology, engineering, and architecture in the country in terms of R&D output, faculty size, and enrollment. Técnico is internationally recognized for its academic and research programs in physics engineering, aerospace, and biomedical engineering.

Instituto Superior Técnico Key Statistics

IST comprises 10 departments offering more than 80 courses, including 19 undergraduate programs, 32 postgraduate programs, and 33 Ph.D. programs, including several specialized courses. Some of these academic units include the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering, and the Department of Bioengineering.

Instituto Superior Técnico's student population is approximately 11,458, composed of 6,495 undergraduates and 4,768 postgraduates. It employs 853 academic staff

The other Instituto Superior Técnico key statistics include its three campuses spread across the Lisbon metropolitan area, namely the Tecnológico e Nuclear Campus in Loures, Taguspark campus in Oeiras, and the main Alameda campus in Lisbon.

IST has numerous academic and research affiliations, including the Top Industrial Managers for Europe, the Consortium Linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research, and the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research.

Instituto Superior Técnico Research

Técnico has a world-class research and development program comprising 23 R&D units divided into more than 50 working groups. Its top fields of research are physics, computer science, and materials science.

Instituto Superior Técnico research outputs have been published in prestigious journals like Physical Review Letters, Physical Review D, and ChemInform. Its researchers have attended major scholarly conferences such as ICASSP: International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, ICRA: International Conference on Robotics and Automation, and CDC: Conference on Decision and Control.

The most cited Instituto Superior Técnico research publication is Perlmutter et al.’s (1999) “Measurements of Ω and Λ from 42 High-Redshift Supernovae.” This popular experimental report was published in The Astrophysical Journal and has received 22,730 citations to date.

The university’s second most cited publication is Madeira and Oliveira’s (2004) “Biclustering algorithms for biological data analysis: A survey,” which appeared in the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics and has been cited 2,506 times.

Moreover, IST’s third most cited publication is Nascimento and Dias’s (2005) “Vertex component analysis: A fast algorithm to unmix hyperspectral data,” which was published in the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing and has received 2,400 citations.

The university has several research centers and institutes. Its research facilities for basic sciences include the Centre for Computational and Stochastic Mathematics, Centre for Functional Analysis, Linear Structures and Applications, Centre for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies, and the Centre for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems.

For applied life sciences, some of Técnico‘s research units are the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences, Centre for Computational and Stochastic Mathematics, Centre for Management Studies of IST, and the Centre for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies.
