The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Genetics Universities in United Kingdom Ranking is grounded in meticulous data collection and analysis, drawing primarily from the comprehensive bibliometric databases OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside a multitude of other respected data sources. These platforms provide a wealth of publication and citation data critical for evaluating academic output with precision. For this edition, the bibliometric data necessary to devise the citation-based metrics were collected on November 27, 2024.
The core metric underpinning each institution’s position within the ranking is the aggregate of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranked scholars affiliated with that university, whose primary publication focus is Genetics. The D-index specifically includes only publications and citation data that pertain to the Genetics discipline, thus ensuring strict relevance and comparability across scholars and institutions.
Scope of Research Considered
In the development of this ranking, an extensive database of 279,971 scientist profiles from numerous bibliometric data sources was examined. Of these, 7,415 scientists with a significant focus on Genetics were analyzed in detail. To maintain the highest standards, eligibility for consideration required scientists to have a D-index of at least 40, with the majority of their top-tier publications being unequivocally within the field of Genetics.
Furthermore, individual awards and significant achievements in the Genetics field were incorporated as additional factors in the evaluation process. The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is adjusted in increments of ten, reflecting the overall population of scholars estimated in each discipline, all while ensuring that the top 1% of leaders are included. To further validate subject specialization, the disparity between a scientist's general H-index and their Genetics-specific D-index was capped at 30% or less. Awards and professional recognition within the field also contributed positively to a researcher's standing.

Each researcher's H-index is established from data provided by OpenAlex and CrossRef, the most authoritative bibliometric databases presently serving the global research community.
