Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
For the current edition, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a wide range of bibliometric sources. Of these, 31,170 scientists specializing in Earth Science were subject to detailed analysis. To ensure excellence, only those scholars with a D-index threshold of at least 30 were considered, provided that the majority of their impactful publications are in the area of Earth Science. Additionally, recognition of scientists’ awards and notable achievements in the field of Earth Science played a role in the evaluation.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers adjusts in increments of 10, contingent on the number of scholars within each discipline, thereby guaranteeing the inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. Another stringent criterion mandates that the gap between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index remains within 30%. This ensures that rankings are discipline-focused. Awards and key professional accomplishments further influence the standing of scientists.
Verification and Data Validation Practices
Research.com is acutely aware that raw bibliometric data alone cannot wholly capture a scholar's contributions. As a result, every scientist’s profile included in the ranking has undergone manual verification and was carefully cross-referenced with publications in reputable, trustworthy sources. Although not a direct ranking factor, the volume of papers published in influential journals and at major conferences serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution to the field.
Positions in the ranking are established using each researcher’s H-index, sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, recognized as the world’s most reputable bibliometric databases within the research community.
