The bibliometric data that underpin the citation-based metrics in this ranking were collected on 2024-11-27. The evaluation process uses a combination of publication and citation metrics, with a ranking position determined by the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all qualifying scholars affiliated with a given institution whose primary publication area is Computer Science. Importantly, the D-index metric is discipline-specific, encapsulating only those publications and citations relevant to Computer Science for each scholar.
Scope of Research Analysed in the Ranking
The ranking encompasses a broad and meticulously selected body of research. A total of 279,971 scientist profiles were initially identified using various bibliometric data sources. Of these, 40,471 scientists specializing in Computer Science were subject to detailed analysis.
To qualify, a scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 30, and the majority of their high-tier publications had to be firmly within the domain of Computer Science. Scientist awards and achievements in the field were also considered during the evaluation. For identifying the top researchers, the D-index threshold was set as an increment of 10, the exact value for which was determined based on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading scholars are included in the list.
To further ensure field-specific impact, a proximity of 30% or less was required between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index. In addition, outstanding achievements and recognitions conferred upon researchers within their respective fields were accounted for, enhancing the multidimensional analysis beyond purely quantitative metrics.
Additional Verification Practices
Research.com is acutely aware that raw bibliometric data, however comprehensive, should not be the sole measure of scholarly impact or institutional excellence. As such, every profile included in the ranking was subject to careful manual verification. This involved cross-referencing with trusted publication sources to validate accuracy and identity.
While the number of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings was not a direct determinant in the final ranking, it serves as a valuable contextual measure of a researcher's active contribution to the field of Computer Science.
Positions in the ranking are established using the H-index for each researcher, drawing exclusively from the reputable OpenAlex and CrossRef databases. We invite readers seeking further detail on data collating, methodological nuances, and selection criteria to consult our methodology page for a complete overview of the rigorous approach underpinning these results.
Research.com Agenda and Mission
The creation of the Research.com ranking is driven by a commitment to foster transparency and advancement within the global research community. Our mission is to inspire scientists, business leaders, and policymakers worldwide to observe the trajectories of leading experts, and to create broad visibility regarding top scholars in specific scientific disciplines. We strive to equip the community with the insights necessary to identify leading expertise at global, national, and institutional levels, thereby supporting informed decision-making and recognition of academic excellence.
