Data Sources and Methodology
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Kenya Ranking is built upon a rigorous data-driven approach utilizing several trusted bibliometric databases. The primary sources for data collection are OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other carefully selected bibliometric resources. The bibliometric data necessary for establishing citation-based metrics were meticulously gathered on 2024-11-27.
A university’s position within the ranking is determined by summing up the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all affiliated scholars included in the ranking. The D-index is a discipline-specific metric that includes only scientific publications and citations relevant to the discipline under consideration. Importantly, the assessment takes into account scholars from all major research fields to ensure a comprehensive and balanced institutional ranking.
Scope of Research and Scholar Inclusion Criteria
This ranking evaluated the research scope by considering an extensive dataset containing 279,971 scientist profiles. These profiles were identified and aggregated from a diverse collection of bibliometric data sources spanning all critical scientific disciplines. To maintain a high standard of evaluation, each scientist was required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 20 for eligibility. In selecting qualifying researchers, additional factors such as notable awards and field-specific achievements were also considered to further denote an individual’s impact within their domain.
Verification and Quality Control Measures
The Research.com team recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the breadth and quality of scientific contributions. Accordingly, each scientist profile underwent thorough manual verification and the information was cross-referenced with publications appearing in a wide range of reputable sources. This verification step is crucial to ensuring data integrity and accuracy in ranking outcomes.
While the number of articles published in top journals and leading conference proceedings is not directly factored into a researcher’s ranking position, it is acknowledged as an important secondary indicator of scientific achievement. Principal ranking positions are established using each researcher’s H-index as ascertained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, both widely recognized as premier bibliometric data providers. For those seeking more comprehensive details, we encourage review of the procedures and criteria outlined on our methodology page.
