Data Sources and Criteria
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Rising Stars of Science in Austria Ranking was developed using comprehensive data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable bibliometric data repositories. To ensure the focus remained on emerging scholars, only scientists whose earliest publication dates fall within the last 12 years or less were considered eligible for inclusion. The bibliometric data underlying the citation-based metrics utilized in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. Each scientist’s ranking position is ultimately determined by their H-index, a well-established indicator of research productivity and citation impact.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The ranking involved a thorough assessment of 279,971 scientist profiles identified through a diverse set of bibliometric data sources spanning all major scientific disciplines. To be eligible for consideration, qualifying H-index thresholds were set uniquely for each research area, generally ranging around 30 to 40, reflecting variations in publication and citation practices between fields. In addition to citation metrics, scientists’ awards and notable achievements within their specific fields of study were also factored into the evaluation process. From this broad and competitive pool, only the top 1,000 scientists with the highest H-index scores are formally featured in the ranking.
Additional Verification Practices
The researchers behind the ranking recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly impact. Accordingly, all scientist profiles were subjected to rigorous manual verification and cross-checked against publications documented in a wide range of trustworthy academic sources, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data presented. While not directly influencing the ranking position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is acknowledged as a significant secondary signal of a researcher’s contributions within their discipline.
The ranking positions are established based on each researcher’s H-index according to data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and well-regarded bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
