Data Sources and Metrics Used in the Ranking
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Scientists in Portugal Ranking was primarily constructed using bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple complementary data repositories. These platforms are among the most reputable and comprehensive bibliometric databases available to the global research community, providing extensive coverage of scholarly publications, citations, and associated metadata. The citation-based metrics underpinning this ranking were compiled on January 12, 2026.
A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized metric that evaluates scholarly impact strictly within the scope of the examined discipline. Unlike a general H-index, the D-index considers only those papers and citations relevant to Political Science for this specific ranking, thereby offering a more precise measure of a researcher’s influence in their respective field.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking process commenced with the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across diverse bibliometric databases and spanning all academic disciplines. From this comprehensive pool, 5 scientists focused specifically on Political Science were selected for inclusion in the current ranking.
To qualify, a scientist’s D-index needed to be at least 20, ensuring that only those with demonstrable impact and active engagement in Political Science were considered. Additionally, the majority of an eligible scientist’s tier publications had to pertain directly to Political Science. Awards and recognized achievements within the discipline were also factored into considerations, complementing the quantitative citation metrics.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is calibrated incrementally by 10 points, depending on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach guarantees the inclusion of approximately the top 1% of leading scholars per field. Moreover, to assure consistency and relevance to the discipline, a researcher’s general H-index and D-index must typically not differ by more than 30%.
Additional Verification Practices
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone can never fully encapsulate a scholar’s research output and contribution. Therefore, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent rigorous manual verification. This process involved cross-correlating publication records against a wide array of trustworthy and independent sources to validate both authorship and disciplinary relevance.
While not directly influencing ranking position, the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings is acknowledged as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s research impact and standing within Political Science.
The final ranking positions reflect each researcher’s D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef data, reflecting the rigor and transparency essential in bibliometric evaluation. For detailed insights into our comprehensive ranking methodology, we invite readers to visit our methodology page.
