To establish a robust and credible ranking, an extensive dataset encompassing 188,172 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric sources and spanning all scientific disciplines was initially examined. Within the discipline of Physics specifically, profiles of 6 scientists were scrutinized.
Qualification for inclusion in this ranking required that a scientist’s D-index be at least 70, with a substantial majority of their tier publications situated within the domain of Physics. In addition to bibliometric measures, peer-recognized awards and other professional achievements relating to Physics were also taken into account to provide a holistic assessment of each researcher’s contributions.
The threshold for the D-index is adjusted in increments of 10 in accordance with the estimated total population of scholars within each discipline. This methodology guarantees inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars. Furthermore, to ensure discipline-specific alignment, candidates must demonstrate a proximity of 30% or less when comparing their overall H-index to their Physics D-index, effectively minimizing the impact of contributions outside the examined field.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot definitively capture the full scope of a scientist’s impact, the researchers behind this ranking implemented rigorous manual verification processes. Each profile was cross-checked against publications indexed in an array of trustworthy scientific sources and databases to maintain accuracy and authenticity.
While not factored directly into the ranking position, the volume of papers published in prominent journals and leading conference proceedings is considered a valuable secondary indicator reflecting a scientist’s engagement and stature within their field of study.
Ultimately, the position in the ranking is established by each researcher's D-index derived from data authoritative in the research community—OpenAlex and CrossRef. These databases are among the most prominent and widely used bibliometric repositories, providing a solid foundation for this ranking.
