A scientist’s position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric designed to focus exclusively on papers and citation metrics relevant to the examined discipline—in this case, Physics. The D-index offers a refined measure of research influence by isolating disciplinary-specific scholarly contributions from a researcher’s broader publication record.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
To ensure a rigorous and representative assessment, 188,172 scientist profiles from diverse bibliometric sources across all disciplines were examined. Within this expansive dataset, 356 scientists specializing in Physics were identified and evaluated.
Eligibility for inclusion in the ranking required scientists to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 70. Additionally, the majority of their tier publications had to substantively focus on Physics. Beyond metrics, consideration was also given to scientist awards and notable achievements within the field, reflecting a holistic view of scholarly impact.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10, relative to the total estimated number of scholars in each discipline. This method guarantees the incorporation of approximately the top 1% of leading experts. Furthermore, to ensure disciplinary relevance, a scientist’s general H-index and D-index must be within 30% of each other, ensuring proximity between overall and discipline-specific impact.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully encapsulate the quality and output of scientific contributions, the ranking process incorporates extensive manual verification. All scientist profiles were carefully cross-validated against publications documented in a wide array of trustworthy and authoritative sources.
While not a direct component affecting ranking position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s influence and contribution within the Physics community.
The position within the ranking is ultimately established using each researcher’s D-index derived from the curated data of OpenAlex and CrossRef—the two most prominent and widely respected bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
