Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Microbiology Scientists in Serbia Ranking is grounded in comprehensive bibliometric data obtained primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple reputable data sources. These platforms represent some of the most extensive and reliable repositories of scholarly publication metadata accessible to the global research community. The citation-based metrics used to derive the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring up-to-date and relevant data.
A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively accounts for papers and citations related to the specific discipline under review—in this case, Microbiology. The D-index offers a nuanced insight by isolating disciplinary impact, allowing for an accurate and focused assessment of researchers’ scientific contributions within Microbiology.
Scope and Selection Criteria
The ranking was compiled after examining 187,659 scientist profiles drawn from a variety of bibliometric data sources across all academic disciplines. Among these, 1,152 scientist profiles identified specifically in Microbiology were thoroughly evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, candidates were required to have a D-index of at least 40, with a majority of their tier publications firmly rooted in Microbiology research.
In addition to bibliometric indicators, scientists’ awards and achievements within the field of Microbiology were carefully considered to further refine the ranking. The D-index thresholds are set in increments of 10, calibrated according to the estimated population size of scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees that the ranking incorporates the top 1% of leading experts in the field. To maintain disciplinary relevance, there is also a requisite proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s overall H-index and their Microbiology-specific D-index, ensuring that recognized contributions are closely aligned with the targeted research area.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the complexity of scholarly impact, the Research.com team carried out meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles. This process involved cross-referencing publication records against a broad range of trustworthy academic sources to validate the accuracy and authenticity of the data. Although the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly determine a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary signal of their substantive contribution to the Microbiology discipline.
The ranking position is ultimately established based on the D-index calculated from information aggregated primarily via OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent bibliometric databases available.
