A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that calculates academic impact within a specific discipline. The D-index solely includes publications and citation metrics relevant to the examined field, allowing for a discipline-specific evaluation of scholarly contributions.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
For this edition, a total of 187,659 scientist profiles from a broad array of bibliometric sources were analyzed across all disciplines. Within the domain of Microbiology specifically, 1,000 scientists were examined in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, candidates were required to have a D-index of at least 40, with the majority of their tiered publications concentrated in Microbiology.
Besides bibliometric performance, awards and notable achievements in the field of Microbiology were also considered to further validate scholarly contributions. The threshold for the D-index is set dynamically as increments of 10, relative to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach ensures that the top 1% of leading experts are incorporated into the ranking. Additionally, to maintain coherence between general and discipline-specific impact, the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index is required to be 30% or less.
Verification and Validation Procedures
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the multifaceted contribution of researchers, the compilation of the ranking involved thorough manual verification. Each scientist’s profile was cross-referenced against publications from a wide range of reputable sources to ensure accuracy and completeness.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect a researcher’s position within the Research.com ranking, it remains a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s impact and prominence within the field.
The ranking positions are ultimately established based on each researcher’s D-index, calculated from data obtained through OpenAlex and CrossRef. These databases represent the most reliable and respected sources of bibliometric information accessible to the research community today.
