The citation-based metrics used to underpin this ranking were compiled on January 12, 2026, providing a current and data-driven foundation for analysis.
A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that focuses exclusively on publications and citations within the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Materials Science. The D-index allows for a more targeted evaluation of research impact by isolating disciplinary contributions from a practitioner's overall body of work.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
In developing this ranking, 279,971 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric databases were analyzed across all disciplines, with 2 scientist profiles specifically highlighted under Materials Science from Bangladesh. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist was required to have a minimum D-index of 40, ensuring representation among the most impactful researchers within the discipline. Additionally, a majority of tier publications had to be within Materials Science to affirm thematic relevance.
Beyond bibliometric thresholds, scientists’ awards and achievements in Materials Science were also considered to provide additional context and validation of their contributions. The D-index threshold is calibrated as increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars per discipline, a methodology designed to consistently capture the top 1% of leading researchers. Importantly, a proximity of 30% or less between a researcher’s overall H-index and their D-index was required to confirm focused disciplinary expertise.

This process involved cross-correlation with publications listed across a diverse range of trustworthy academic sources to avoid misclassification and to ensure the integrity of each profile.
While not directly affecting the ranking placement, the number of papers published in high-impact journals and well-regarded conference proceedings is acknowledged as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s influence and contribution within Materials Science.
The final positioning within the ranking is derived from each researcher’s D-index calculated using data exclusively from OpenAlex and CrossRef—the two most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
