The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Scientists in Australia Ranking is underpinned by comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reliable data sources. The citation-based metrics used to devise the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist's position in this ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized metric that considers only the publications and citations relevant to the examined discipline, ensuring focused and accurate assessment within the field of Economics and Finance.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking process involved an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles sourced from a diverse range of bibliometric databases across all disciplines. Specifically, 112 scientists identified within the Economics and Finance disciplines were considered. To qualify for inclusion, candidates were required to have a D-index of at least 30, with a majority of their tier publications situated within the Economics and Finance domain. In addition to bibliometric thresholds, a scientist’s awards and achievements relevant to the field were also factored into the evaluation.
The D-index threshold for top researchers is dynamically set in increments of 10, corresponding to the estimated total number of scholars in the discipline, while ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are comprehensively represented. Furthermore, a proximity criterion is applied whereby the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index must be 30% or less, reinforcing the discipline-specific relevance of their research impact.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of a researcher’s output, the team behind the ranking conducted thorough manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide range of trustworthy and authoritative sources to validate accuracy and relevance.
While not a direct component affecting rank, the number of papers published in leading journals and influential conference proceedings is regarded as an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s scholarly contribution within Economics and Finance.
