Data Sources and Ranking Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Biology and Biochemistry Scientists in Mauritius Ranking is grounded in comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other authoritative databases. These platforms are among the most prominent and well-established bibliometric resources available to the global research community, providing extensive coverage of publications, citations, and related metadata. The citation-based metrics utilized in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the most up-to-date snapshot of scientific impact.
A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively accounts for publications and citations within the examined discipline—in this case, Biology and Biochemistry. This focus ensures that the ranking accurately reflects a researcher’s influence and scholarly contributions specific to their disciplinary domain.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking evaluates a total of 188,046 scientist profiles identified across all academic disciplines from a broad range of bibliometric data sources. Specifically within the discipline of Biology and Biochemistry, 1,003 scientists were examined in detail. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist’s D-index must be at least 40, reflecting a substantial level of influence in their field. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications had to be directly related to Biology and Biochemistry, ensuring disciplinary relevance.
Beyond bibliometric indicators, awards and professional achievements in the field were also factored into the selection process to further substantiate a researcher’s standing. The D-index threshold for consideration is incrementally adjusted by steps of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline; this methodology guarantees inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. Moreover, to ensure alignment between general and discipline-specific impact, only scientists with a proximity of 30% or less between their overall H-index and their D-index were considered.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
The Research.com team fully acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of a scholar’s research output or impact. Consequently, all scientist profiles were subjected to meticulous manual verification processes, including cross-correlation of publication records against a wide array of reputable and trustworthy sources.
While the quantity of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor in determining rank position, it is regarded as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contributions within a specific scientific area.
Importantly, the ranking positions themselves are established based on each researcher’s D-index obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef data. These robust data sources form the backbone of the evaluation, ensuring transparency and reliability in assessing scholar impact.
