What Is a Public Health Bachelor's Degree?

A public health Bachelor of Science (BS) is an undergraduate degree focused on preventing health problems and improving health across populations. Students may study disease patterns, data, health communication, policy, and community programs. A BS is not a clinical license, and its science and quantitative requirements can differ from those of a BA, BAS, or health education degree.

For this decision, the degree label matters less than the graduation requirements. Two public health BS programs can offer similar courses but different hands-on options. Even shorter course terms for a public health BS do not establish that an internship can be completed on the same schedule. Read the catalog and fieldwork handbook together.

Do Public Health BS Programs Require Local Fieldwork or Internships?

Not universally. Some BS programs require a supervised internship or practicum; others offer an optional placement, service-learning course, research project, or capstone without an external site. A requirement to complete fieldwork does not necessarily mean it must be local: a school may restrict placements to approved partners, allow sites near online students, or require travel.

The distinctions below help you identify what an advertised "hands-on" experience actually obligates you to do.

Program arrangementWhat it means for local availability
Required external placementConfirm that a site near you can meet the school's supervision, activity, and approval rules before relying on it.
Optional internshipLocal experience may strengthen your preparation, but ask whether the school helps students obtain it.
Course-based project or capstoneA local organization may be useful, but an external placement may not be necessary for graduation.

Ask the fieldwork coordinator for the current handbook and the deadline for site approval. Check required hours, permitted tasks, supervisor qualifications, on-site expectations, and whether the experience is paid or may occur at your existing workplace. An employer's willingness to host you does not replace academic approval. When comparing lower-cost routes through online public health study, include any unpaid work, travel, or reduced paid hours in your comparison.

How Can You Find Accredited Public Health BS Programs?

First, confirm that the institution holds recognized institutional accreditation. Then check the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) record for the exact school, program, and degree you are considering. An institution may be accredited while a particular BS is outside the scope of its public health-specific accreditation; a related MPH's status does not prove the BS is covered.

Ask the program to identify the accreditation status that applies to your intended degree and entry term in writing. Accreditation also does not confirm local fieldwork availability, so request the placement policy separately. This distinction matters when using accreditation-focused online MPH comparisons as a reference point: an MPH listing cannot establish the accreditation scope or placement rules of an undergraduate program.

Do Public Health Careers Require Certification or Licensure?

A public health BS does not itself grant a professional certification or clinical license. Requirements depend on the job, employer, and state. Some health education positions may value or specify a credential such as Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), while regulated clinical work requires its own qualifying education and licensure.

Before choosing a field site to prepare for a particular job, check current postings and the responsible credentialing body's eligibility rules. Neither a placement nor a more advanced degree automatically substitutes for a required credential. Likewise, comparing DrPH and PhD program goals is relevant to later leadership or research plans, not to obtaining a clinical license through a BS.

Other Things You Should Know About Public Health

Can I use volunteer hours completed before enrolling?

Do not count on it. Programs commonly assess work completed under their course supervision; ask whether any prior experience can satisfy a requirement before making your degree plan.

What if my approved field site closes or withdraws?

Contact the academic coordinator immediately. Ask how completed work will be documented, whether a replacement site is needed, and how a change could affect your course grade or graduation date.

Can I show internship work to prospective employers?

Usually only with appropriate permission and safeguards. Ask the host and program what you may share, and remove confidential, identifiable, or restricted information before adding a deliverable to a portfolio.

Can a student request accessibility accommodations for fieldwork?

Yes. Contact the school's accessibility office early and discuss the placement's essential tasks with the coordinator. The school can explain its accommodation process and how an approved arrangement would work at the host site.
