Following a directive from the Ministry of Public Education in the mid-1980s, the university was officially opened in 1992 as Terza Università degli Studi di Roma, which translates to Third University of Rome. Since its establishment, the university is distinctly noted for its rehabilitation of old school premises and buildings, transforming them into various kinds of student and research facilities.
