The university campus is organized into ten departments, including the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Department of Humanities, and the Department of Engineering and Architecture. It also houses historical buildings and a 4.2-hectare botanical garden. Aside from having a main campus in Tiestre, the university has other sites in Pordenone, Gorizia, and Portogruaro.

UniTS offers more than 60 official degree courses for undergraduates, postgraduates, and doctoral students. It also provides online programs and student exchange programs with worldwide partnerships from about 120 universities. The institution’s primary language of instruction is Italian, though it offers many specialization programs in English. Some of its top-ranked courses include chemistry, clinical medicine, engineering, and physics.

The university has a student population of around 15,000, and approximately eight percent of its students are international. It employs about 800 teachers and researchers and over 600 administrative and technical personnel.

University of Trieste Research

The university is recognized as one of the top research institutions nationally and internationally. It aims to increase its doctoral programs and produce top-level researchers and scientists. Its top three research fields are physics, medicine, and astrophysics.

UniTS researchers have published in notable journal publications like Astronomy and Astrophysics, Physical Review D, and Physical Review Letters. They have also been invited to attend and present research papers at top conferences and symposiums, such as Web Science, the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium, and the Electric Ship Technologies Symposium.

The most cited article produced by the University of Trieste research is Agostinelli et al.’s (2003) “Geant4—A simulation toolkit.” It received 33,191 citations and was published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. The institution’s second most cited research output is Ade et al.’s (2016) “Planck 2015 results - XIII. Cosmological parameters.” A total of 17,493 books, articles, and other publications cited this classic work, and it was featured in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The third most cited article is Ade et al.’s (2014) “Planck 2013 results. XVI. Cosmological parameters.” This excellent research received a total of 16,720 citations and was published in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

UniTS is also home to modern research facilities organized according to departments, interdepartmental centers, and inter-university centers. Some of these research centers and institutes include the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, the Research IC on Systems, Technologies, and Services, the Interuniversity Research Center on Influenza and Other Transmissible Infections, and the Alpine Center for Botanical Studies.
