Overview of the Data Sources and Metrics
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Sweden Ranking derives its results from a comprehensive collection of bibliometric data. The primary sources powering this assessment are OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are among the most authoritative and widely utilized bibliometric databases in academia. In addition, a suite of other reputable data sources was leveraged to ensure robust coverage and accuracy.
Key citation-based metrics used in the ranking were established by analyzing bibliometric data gathered as of 2024-11-27. An institution’s position in the ranking is determined by aggregating the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars affiliated with that university. The D-index is a discipline-specific adaptation of the H-index, focusing exclusively on publications and citation data relevant to a scholar's field of expertise. It should be noted that, while the D-index is discipline-focused, scientists from all major research areas were taken into account when forming the ranking results.
Scope of Research Assessments
This edition’s ranking is based on the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles, meticulously identified from a wide range of bibliometric databases. These profiles encompass researchers representing all major scientific disciplines. In order to be considered for ranking, each scientist was required to meet a D-index threshold of 20 in their respective fields. Further, each scientist’s awards and achievements—markers of distinction within their research community—were also taken into account as part of the evaluation process.
Data Verification and Validation Practices
The Research.com team recognizes that raw bibliometric data, while critical, should not be used as the sole determinant of scholarly merit. To enhance reliability, every scientist profile considered in the ranking was manually verified and extensively cross-checked against publications in a variety of trusted sources. As an additional but non-determinant measure, the number of papers published in top-tier journals and leading conference proceedings was tracked, offering a valuable indicator of a scientist’s broader contribution to their discipline.
Positions in the ranking were calculated using each researcher’s H-index, as per data curated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, both of which are recognized as among the most prominent and widely accepted bibliometric sources in the research community.
