John H. Sinfelt was affiliated with ExxonMobil in the United States during their career. Their work focused mainly within industrial and engineering chemistry, particularly related to catalysis.

Throughout their career, John H. Sinfelt received multiple notable awards. They were elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1979. That same year, they were awarded the US President's National Medal of Science "for scientific research on the nature of heterogeneous catalysis leading to the development of new catalyst systems for the production of low lead gasoline." This award was presented by President Carter at a White House ceremony on January 14, 1980.

In addition, John H. Sinfelt earned the Perkin Medal from the Society of Chemical Industry, American Section, in 1984. Two years later, in 1986, they received the E. V. Murphree Award in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry from the American Chemical Society (ACS).
