A key metric employed in the ranking is the D-index (Discipline H-index), which uniquely accounts for a researcher’s publications and citation metrics restricted exclusively to their examined discipline. This targeted approach allows for a discipline-specific assessment of scholarly output and influence.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
In constructing the ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles spanning all scientific disciplines were examined leveraging a variety of bibliometric data sources. Specifically, 2,354 scientists were identified within the Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines for detailed review.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist must have achieved a minimum D-index of 30, with a majority of their tier publications predominantly positioned within the Social Sciences and Humanities domain. Additionally, consideration was given to scientists’ awards and documented achievements pertinent to these fields, amplifying the rigor of scholar evaluation.
The D-index threshold for inclusion is dynamically set in increments of 10, reflecting the estimated pool size of scholars per discipline, thereby ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are incorporated. Furthermore, a proximity criterion mandates that the difference between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index must be 30% or less, reinforcing the focus on discipline-centric academic excellence.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing the inherent limitations of relying solely on raw bibliometric data for assessing scholarly output, the Research.com team has implemented meticulous manual verification protocols. Each scientist profile was cross-correlated against an array of credible publication sources to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
While not directly influencing ranking positions, the volume of papers published in highly regarded journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution within their domain. The final ranking positions are derived using the D-index as calculated from data aggregated through OpenAlex and CrossRef, which remain the foremost bibliometric repositories accessible to the global research community.
