This metric refines the traditional H-index by including only papers and citation counts specifically associated with the examined discipline, thus providing a more precise measure of a researcher’s impact within their specialized field.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
Our ranking process encompassed an extensive review of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources across all disciplines. Within this wide pool, 3,846 scientists specializing specifically in the Social Sciences and Humanities were examined in detail.
To qualify for inclusion in the Social Sciences and Humanities Ranking, researchers were required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 30. Additionally, the majority of their tier publications needed to fall squarely within the Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines. Beyond quantitative metrics, a scientist’s awards and notable achievements within the field were also carefully considered as part of the evaluation.
Importantly, the D-index inclusion threshold is scaled in increments of 10 relative to the total estimated number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring a statistically rigorous inclusion of leading experts. This approach is designed to guarantee that approximately the top 1% of scholars—based on discipline-specific research impact—are incorporated into the list. Furthermore, only scientists with a proximity of 30% or less between their general H-index and D-index were considered, to ensure focus on those whose impact is predominantly concentrated in Social Sciences and Humanities.

Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture a scholar’s contributions, the team behind this ranking implemented stringent manual verification procedures. Each scientist profile was carefully cross-checked and validated against a broad spectrum of trusted publication records and authoritative sources.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect a researcher’s rank, it is acknowledged as a valuable secondary signal reflecting the magnitude of their contributions to their specific area of study.
