Data Sources and Collection
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists in India Ranking is primarily generated utilizing comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple additional verified databases. These data sources collectively provide a robust and wide-ranging foundation for citation-based metrics. The bibliometric data used to devise the rankings were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the incorporation of the most recent and relevant publication and citation records available at that time. A key metric underpinning the ranking is the D-index (Discipline H-index), which specifically measures a researcher's scholarly impact within a defined discipline by considering only those papers and citations pertinent to the examined field.
Scope and Criteria for Inclusion
Our ranking is derived from a critical analysis of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric repositories, encompassing all disciplines. Within this comprehensive pool, the focus was narrowed to 8,000 researchers specializing in Social Sciences and Humanities. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist must have a minimum D-index of 30, with the majority of their tier publications anchored firmly in the Social Sciences and Humanities domain. Beyond bibliometric indicators, notable awards and achievements in the field were also considered to provide a more holistic evaluation.
It is important to note that the D-index threshold is dynamically set in increments of 10, calibrated relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline to maintain rigor and inclusivity. This adaptive threshold guarantees the representation of at least the top 1% of leading scholars in the field. Additionally, to ensure alignment between general scholarly output and discipline-specific influence, the discrepancy between a scientist's overall H-index and their D-index is maintained at 30% or less.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing the inherent limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the ranking process incorporates meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile is cross-correlated against an extensive array of trustworthy publication sources to validate accuracy and authenticity. While the core ranking position is determined by the D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most recognized and reliable bibliometric platforms—additional consideration is given to publication volume in prestigious journals and conference proceedings as a valuable secondary signal of research contribution, though this does not directly influence ranking placement.
Our methodology reflects a careful balance between quantitative metrics and qualitative verification to establish a credible and meaningful ranking. For a detailed exposition of the methodology employed, we invite readers to visit our methodology page.
