The bibliometric data used for devising citation-based metrics, including citation counts and other relevant indicators, were collected on January 12, 2026. Each scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a tailored metric that exclusively accounts for papers and citation metrics within the scientist’s examined discipline — in this case, Political Science. This ensures the ranking reflects expertise and impact focused specifically on this academic field.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking is based on an extensive analysis of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a diverse range of bibliometric sources across all academic disciplines. Of these, precisely 1,000 scientists specializing in Political Science were examined in detail for inclusion in the Ukrainian-specific Political Science ranking.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index needed to be at least 20, ensuring that all ranked researchers demonstrate a substantial and sustained impact within Political Science. Furthermore, a majority of a qualifying scientist’s tier publications had to be directly in the Political Science domain. Apart from bibliometric performance, scientists’ awards and notable achievements within the field were also considered as supplementary indicators of research leadership and academic distinction.
The D-index threshold for considering top researchers is dynamically set as increments of 10, depending on the estimated total pool of scholars within each discipline. This graduated standard guarantees that the final list incorporates the top 1% of leading scholars in Political Science in Ukraine. In addition, to maintain consistency and disciplinary relevance, only those researchers whose general H-index and D-index differ by 30% or less were considered, reflecting a strong focus in their scholarly output.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
We acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot comprehensively evaluate a researcher’s impact or scholarly contributions. Accordingly, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent manual verification. Profiles were cross-referenced against publication records across a wide spectrum of trustworthy and reputable academic sources to validate accuracy and authenticity.
While the position in the ranking is determined strictly by the D-index derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef data, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings serves as a valuable secondary signal of a researcher’s contribution to Political Science. This additional perspective reinforces the reliability and credibility of the ranking, offering a nuanced view of scholarly productivity and influence.
