Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Scientists in Uruguay Ranking relies primarily on data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and reputable bibliometric databases accessible to the research community. In addition to these primary sources, multiple other bibliometric repositories were consulted to ensure the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the underlying data. Bibliometric data used to devise citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026. Each scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only papers and citation counts within the examined discipline, thereby providing a targeted evaluation of impact and productivity in Economics and Finance specifically.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking is based on a rigorous examination of 279,971 scientist profiles sourced from a diverse array of bibliometric databases across all disciplines. From this extensive dataset, 1,000 scientists specializing in Economics and Finance were identified and analyzed in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index had to meet or exceed a threshold of 30; furthermore, a majority of their tier publications needed to be within the domain of Economics and Finance. Additional consideration was given to awards and professional achievements that underscore a researcher’s contributions to the field.
The D-index threshold for top researchers is dynamically set in increments of 10, calibrated according to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach honors the goal of incorporating the top 1% of leading scholars in the final list. To ensure that the D-index accurately reflects disciplinary focus, a maximum proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index is strictly observed.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
Understanding that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute evaluative tool, the Research.com team undertook extensive manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications documented in a broad spectrum of trustworthy academic sources to ascertain accuracy and relevance. While the number of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor determining a researcher’s position, it serves as a valuable secondary signal of a scientist’s scholarly contribution within Economics and Finance.
Positions in the ranking were ultimately established using each researcher’s D-index based on data from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These databases represent the highest-quality bibliometric resources currently available to the global academic research community.
