A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a discipline-specific metric that accounts exclusively for papers and citations within the examined field of Economics and Finance. This approach ensures the ranking accurately reflects a researcher’s impact in their area of specialization.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
In constructing the ranking, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles from diverse bibliometric datasets were examined across all scientific disciplines. Within this population, 1,000 scientists specifically engaged in Economics and Finance were identified and evaluated.
To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index had to be at least 30, ensuring a focus on researchers with a significant level of disciplinary impact. Additionally, a majority of the scientist’s tier publications were required to fall within the area of Economics and Finance, reinforcing domain specificity. A scientist’s awards and achievements within the field were also carefully considered as supplementary evidence of their scholarly contributions.
The threshold for the D-index is calibrated in increments of 10 based on the estimated size of the scholar population in each discipline. This dynamic threshold guarantees that the top 1% of leading researchers are captured in the ranking. Moreover, to ensure consistency between general scholarly impact and discipline-specific performance, only scientists whose general H-index and D-index differ by no more than 30% were included.
Verification Practices and Additional Considerations
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the quality and nuance of scholarly output, the ranking team conducted rigorous manual verification of scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications documented in a wide range of trustworthy and authoritative sources to confirm accuracy and relevance.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect a researcher’s ranking position, it constitutes a valuable secondary signal of contribution and influence within the Economics and Finance communities.
The final ranking positions were established using the D-index calculated from data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely-recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
