Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Chemistry Scientists in Bulgaria Ranking is grounded in an extensive compilation of bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable data repositories. Bibliometric data used to derive citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected precisely on January 12, 2026. The position of each scientist within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that accounts exclusively for publications and citation metrics related to the specific discipline under review—in this case, Chemistry. This discipline-specific focus ensures a nuanced and accurate representation of a researcher’s scientific impact within their field.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
The ranking evaluated a broad spectrum of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric data sources encompassing all scientific disciplines. Out of this extensive pool, 12 scientists specializing in Chemistry were identified and assessed for inclusion. To qualify for the Chemistry ranking, researchers were required to have a minimum D-index of 40. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications needed to be firmly rooted in the area of Chemistry, underscoring their primary commitment to the discipline. Beyond bibliometric thresholds, consideration was also given to a scientist’s awards and achievements within the field.
The D-index threshold varies by discipline and is defined in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of scholars in each field. This graduated system ensures the top 1% of leading experts are highlighted while maintaining a balanced representation across disciplines. Moreover, for inclusion, a scientist’s general H-index and D-index must be in close proximity, with a difference of no more than 30%, safeguarding the discipline-specific relevance of the ranking.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the quality and impact of scientific contributions, the Research.com team has implemented rigorous verification procedures. All scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent manual validation and cross-referencing against an array of trustworthy publication sources to ensure accuracy and authenticity. While not directly influencing the ranking position, the volume of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings was considered a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s prominence and influence within Chemistry.
The ranking positions are thus established using the D-index values derived from authoritative sources OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are among the most prominent and reliable bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
