The bibliometric data underpinning the citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the ranking reflects the most up-to-date research impact information available at the time of compilation. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only publications and citations specifically within the examined discipline, thus providing a focused and discipline-relevant assessment of research impact.
Scope and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking’s scope is broad and methodical. Initially, 188,046 scientist profiles across all scientific disciplines were examined using a variety of bibliometric data sources. Within this dataset, the focus narrowed to 2,132 scientists specifically in the fields of Biology and Biochemistry. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher was required to have a D-index of at least 40, with a majority of their tier publications reflecting contributions in Biology and Biochemistry.
In addition to bibliometric thresholds, scholars’ awards and professional achievements in the discipline were considered as supplementary qualitative factors to reinforce the validity of the ranking.
The D-index threshold for consideration is adjusted in increments of 10 depending on the estimated total number of scholars available in each discipline. This adaptive thresholding ensures that the ranking consistently encompasses the top 1% of leading researchers per field. Furthermore, qualifying researchers are required to have a proximity of no more than 30% difference between their overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index, ensuring a strong alignment of overall and discipline-focused research excellence.
Verification and Validation Practices
Research.com recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone cannot definitively represent a scholar’s full research output or impact. As such, all scientist profiles were manually verified and rigorously cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide range of reliable and authoritative sources.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the ranking, it serves as an important secondary indicator of research activity and contribution within the field.
Importantly, the ranking’s core metric—the D-index—is derived exclusively from information collected via OpenAlex and CrossRef, which remain among the most prominent and comprehensive bibliometric databases accessible to the academic and research communities worldwide.
