Data Sources and Metrics Used in the 4th Edition of the Research.com Best Scientists in Spain Ranking
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Scientists in Spain Ranking is built upon robust and authoritative bibliometric data sources, primarily OpenAlex and CrossRef, in addition to several other respected databases. The comprehensive citation-based metrics that inform the ranking were developed from bibliometric data meticulously collected on 2024-11-27. The principal metric used to determine a scientist’s position in the ranking is the H-index, a widely recognized indicator of a researcher’s scientific impact and productivity.
Scope of the Research
In this edition, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles were examined. These profiles were identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources, ensuring broad and multidisciplinary coverage across all major scientific fields. The ranking process applies qualifying H-index criteria tailored to each research area; in most cases, this threshold is set at a minimum of 30 or 40, depending on disciplinary norms. Beyond bibliometric indicators, the selection also takes into account scientists’ awards and notable achievements within their respective fields. Ultimately, only the top 1,000 scientists with the highest H-index values across Spain are included in the final ranking, representing the very forefront of research excellence.
Verification Practices and Data Reliability
We recognize that bibliometric data alone, while valuable, should not serve as the sole instrument for evaluating a scientist’s contribution. Accordingly, every scientist profile was painstakingly verified through manual review, with information cross-referenced across a broad array of reputable publications and sources. While the number of papers published in leading journals and at prominent conferences does not directly influence a scientist’s position in the Research.com ranking, it is acknowledged as a significant secondary measure of scientific contribution within specific fields.
Positions in the ranking are strictly determined using each researcher’s H-index, based on up-to-date information from OpenAlex and CrossRef — the two preeminent bibliometric databases currently available to the scholarly community.
