Overview
East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) is a public research university known for its high research output and its chemistry and chemical engineering programs. It is classified as a Double First Class University by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Once focused on chemical technology, the university has grown its academic repertoire to offer programs for multiple disciplines.
ECUST is divided into 18 schools and departments, centered on fields like chemical engineering, materials sciences, business, biotechnology, information science, and chemistry. It offers 65 undergraduate, 172 graduate, and 94 doctoral programs. Besides chemistry and chemical engineering, the school’s highly regarded courses include materials sciences, environmental studies, natural sciences, and engineering and technology.
Research at ECUST is conducted in its 34 laboratories, with its high priority studies concentrated on eight national disciplines. These include chemical technology, chemical engineering, applied chemistry, biochemical engineering, and industrial catalysis. In addition, the institution has entered academic and collaborative research partnerships with over 60 universities and organizations from all across the globe.
Located in the Xuhui District, ECUST’s main campus spans 415,000 square meters and furnishes an abundance of amenities. Students can enjoy various sports facilities, numerous canteens and other dining spots, three bank branches, ATMs, self-service laundry machines, and a laundry service. Meanwhile, the university’s library network houses over 3.3 million printed publications and 6.9 million digital materials.
Founded in 1952, ECUST’s previous incarnation was the East China Institute of Chemical Technology, which was established through the union of various Chinese universities’ chemical departments. It was granted university status in 1956 and was distinguished as a key university by the Chinese Ministry of Education. In 1993, the institution was renamed East China University of Science and Technology.
As of 2020, ECUST opens its doors to more than 15,600 undergraduates, 8,200 postgraduates, 1,500 doctorate students, and 3,000 teaching staff. Its research on chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, materials science, engineering, and toxicology has been recognized by international research ranking groups. Moreover, the university has hired many faculty members who have won awards in domestic science and teaching competitions.
ECUST’s notable alumni include Li Yasha (singer), Cai Shen Ning (screenwriter), Cheng Siwei (economist), Tie Ya Na (table tennis player), Wu Jiaduo (table tennis player), and Zhang Jianhua (politician).
ECUST aims to be globally recognized as a first-rate institution for teaching and research, as it actively reviews its operating models and curricula and collaborates with foreign universities. It also plans to become an ideal academic destination for international students.

Our research was coordinated by Imed Bouchrika, PhD, a computer scientist with a well-established record
of collaboration on a number of international research projects with different partners from the academic
community. His role was to make sure all data remained unbiased, accurate, and up-to-date.
We list only scientists having D-Index >= 40 within the area of
Chemistry. If you or other scholars are not listed, we appreciate if you can
