Data Sources and Citation-Based Metrics
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in India Ranking is founded on a rigorous analysis of bibliometric data, drawing primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, as well as numerous other data sources. To develop the citation-based metrics underpinning this ranking, bibliometric data were meticulously collected as of 2024-11-27. The principal criterion for institutional ranking is the aggregate D-index (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scholars affiliated with a given institution. Each D-index reflects exclusively the publication and citation data within an examined discipline, ensuring that scientific output is evaluated within its specific research context. Notably, scientists from all major research areas were considered, embodying a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary scope in the formation of the ranking.
Scope of Research Covered
This ranking encompasses an extensive spectrum of research disciplines. A total of 279,971 scientist profiles, identified from a diverse array of bibliometric data sources, were examined across all major scientific areas. To ensure that only established and impactful researchers are represented, a qualifying D-index threshold of 20 was set for each scientist. Furthermore, consideration was given to a scientist’s awards and achievements within their respective fields, adding a layer of qualitative evaluation to complement the quantitative citation analysis.
Verification and Data Integrity Practices
Recognizing that bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the breadth and depth of scientific contribution, the researchers behind this ranking implemented a robust verification process. All scientist profiles were subjected to manual verification and cross-correlation against publications indexed in a wide range of reliable sources to ensure authenticity and relevance. While the frequency of publications in leading journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence an individual’s position in the Research.com ranking, it does provide a valuable supplementary perspective for assessing a researcher's impact in their field.
It is critical to note that a researcher’s position in the ranking is based on their H-index as aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most reputable and widely adopted bibliometric databases available to the global academic community.
