A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), which is a specialized variant of the traditional H-index. The D-index accounts solely for publications and citation metrics within the examined discipline — in this case, Social Sciences and Humanities — providing a focused measure of a researcher’s influence and productivity in their specific field of expertise.
Scope of the Ranking
This ranking is derived from a rigorous examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across diverse bibliometric data sources, covering all academic disciplines. Specifically, five top scientists from the Social Sciences and Humanities category were selected in Kenya.
To qualify for inclusion, a researcher must have a D-index of at least 30. In addition, the majority of their tier publications must be situated within the Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines. Beyond bibliometric performance, a scientist’s awards and notable achievements in the field were incorporated as qualitative indicators, enhancing the robustness of the evaluation.
The threshold for a qualifying D-index is set in increments of 10, calibrated against the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This method ensures that the top 1% of leading scholars worldwide are incorporated into the ranking. Furthermore, the proximity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index is required to be 30% or less, reinforcing the disciplinary relevance of their measured impact.
Verification and Validation Practices
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of a scientist’s output or impact. To address this, all scientist profiles included in the ranking were manually verified and cross-correlated against publication records in a wide array of trustworthy sources, ensuring accuracy and authenticity.
While not directly influencing a researcher’s ranking position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is considered a valuable secondary signal of a scientist’s contribution to their discipline. The ranking itself, however, is established exclusively using the D-index, calculated from data curated by OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most widely recognized and authoritative bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
