Other Things You Should Know About Cybersecurity
It is possible, but harder. Students without IT experience should build practical evidence through labs, internships, help desk work, home labs, certifications, and portfolio projects. Many cybersecurity roles expect knowledge of networks, operating systems, and troubleshooting.
Most programs require some college math, and more technical programs may include discrete math, statistics, or cryptography-related concepts. You usually do not need to be a mathematician, but you should be comfortable with logic, problem-solving, and technical analysis.
A degree may help you qualify for roles that sponsor clearance investigations, but it does not grant a clearance by itself. Clearance decisions depend on citizenship, background, role requirements, employer sponsorship, and government adjudication standards.
Cybersecurity is better if you are committed to security work and want specialized courses. General IT may be better if you are still exploring systems, networking, support, cloud, or administration roles. Many students benefit from a broad IT foundation before specializing in security.
