Letting Someone Cut Ahead When They're Rushed Says More About You Than Politeness.
Viral advice articles have taken to describing the person who waves a rushed stranger ahead in line as displaying a fixed set of psychological traits, variations on emotional intelligence, situational awareness and a "flexible ego." The actual research on everyday helping behavior, running back more than fifty years, points somewhere else entirely: the single strongest predictor of whether someone stops to help another person isn't a trait they carry into the moment. It's whether they themselves are in a hurry.
That finding comes from one of social psychology's most replicated results, and it undercuts the idea that a small act of queue courtesy reveals something stable about a person's character. It says more about their state in that specific moment than their disposition in general.
The Classic Experiment Behind This Question
In 1973, psychologists John Darley and Daniel Batson recruited 67 students at Princeton Theological Seminary, told them they were taking part in a study on religious vocations, and asked each to walk to a nearby building to deliver a short talk, according to their study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. On the way, every student passed a man slumped in a doorway, coughing and apparently in distress, an actor planted by the researchers. Before setting off, students were randomly told either that they were late and should hurry, that they should head over now, or that they had a few minutes to spare. The hurry manipulation determined the outcome almost entirely: 63 percent of students in the low-hurry condition stopped to help, compared with 45 percent in the intermediate condition and just 10 percent of those told they were late.
What Wasn't Predictive Is The Surprising Part
Before the walk, half the students had been assigned to prepare a talk specifically on the parable of the Good Samaritan, the Biblical story about stopping to help a stranger; the other half prepared a talk on unrelated career topics. Darley and Batson found this made no significant difference to whether a student actually stopped. Seminary students on their way to preach about helping a stranger were, on average, no more likely to help the stranger in front of them than students thinking about something else entirely, if they were in a hurry. Personality measures related to religious motivation also failed to predict who helped. Time pressure overrode both.
Modern Neuroscience Points To The Same Mechanism
More recent work has located a plausible reason why. A 2023 fMRI study out of Shenzhen University, published via PubMed-indexed research, found that time pressure suppressed activation in brain regions associated with empathy and emotional valuation when subjects considered a prosocial choice, effectively dampening the neural signal that a low-stakes helping decision would otherwise generate. A related 2025 study from the same research group found that visible cues of other people behaving generously could partly override this effect, boosting helping even under high time pressure, suggesting the suppression isn't absolute but does need something to counteract it.
What The Research Doesn't Support
None of this means letting a rushed stranger go ahead is meaningless, or that everyone is equally likely to do it given the same circumstances; individual differences in empathy and generosity are real and well documented elsewhere in the literature. Positive mood has also been shown to raise the odds of helping in low-stakes situations: a separate 1972 study by psychologists Alice Isen and Paula Levin found that adults who happened to find a dime in a public phone booth's coin return were far more likely to help a stranger pick up dropped papers moments later than those who found nothing, though later replication attempts, including a 1979 study by Batson and colleagues, found a weaker version of the effect, a reminder that even well-known findings in this area don't always hold up at full strength.
What the research doesn't support is the specific claim behind the viral framing: that a single instance of queue courtesy reveals a fixed personality profile, distinguishable from ordinary politeness by some deeper trait. The most robust finding in this area says the opposite. The person who let someone go ahead of them yesterday, while relaxed and running early, might well have walked past the same request today, rushed and preoccupied, and the research suggests that shift would say more about their calendar than their character.
