Overview of University of the Ryukyus

The University of the Ryukyus (Ryūdai), established in 1950, is the oldest and largest national university in Okinawa, Japan. Located primarily in Nishihara Town, Okinawa Prefecture, it was founded on the site of the former Shuri Castle under a unique post-war context. As a national public university, it delivers both advanced research and comprehensive undergraduate and graduate teaching across varied disciplines. With roughly 8,000 students and over 1,200 faculty and staff, and comprising seven faculties and eight graduate schools, the University represents an academic nucleus in Japan’s southernmost region.
