Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 3rd edition of the Research.com Best Universities in Sri Lanka Ranking is based on a comprehensive analysis of bibliometric data sourced primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable scholarly databases. Our team collected the bibliometric data used to devise citation-based metrics on 2024-11-27. A university’s position in the ranking is determined by the aggregate sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) for all ranking scholars affiliated with the institution. The D-index focuses exclusively on publications and citation data relevant to a specific discipline, yet researchers from all core scientific fields were considered to ensure a broad and accurate institutional assessment.
Scope of Research Evaluated
This edition draws upon profiles of 279,971 scientists identified from an array of bibliometric data sources, spanning all principal scientific disciplines. To uphold the highest standards, each scientist needed a minimum qualifying D-index threshold of 20 to be considered for the ranking. In addition, the ranking process accounted for each scientist’s prominent awards and achievements within their research area, reflecting both quantitative bibliometric indicators and qualitative markers of academic influence.
Verification Procedures and Data Integrity
Recognizing the limitations of relying solely on raw bibliometric data, our team implemented rigorous manual verification of each scholar’s profile. Cross-correlation was performed against publications catalogued in a broad spectrum of reliable sources to ensure data accuracy and consistency. While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not a direct criterion for a researcher's position in our ranking, it undoubtedly provides valuable supplementary insight into a scientist’s research impact within their specialty.
Institutional positions in the ranking are established using each researcher’s H-index, reflecting information consolidated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are recognized as two of the most extensive and authoritative bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
