Data Sources and Inclusion Criteria
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Rising Stars of Science in Ireland Ranking primarily relies on comprehensive data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple additional bibliometric data sources. These databases provide extensive and up-to-date publication and citation records crucial for developing citation-based metrics. Importantly, only scientists whose earliest publication dates back 12 years or less were considered for inclusion. This time frame ensures that the ranking focuses on emerging researchers who are in the early to mid-stages of their scientific careers. All bibliometric data used for calculating citation metrics were collected on January 12, 2026.
A researcher’s position in the ranking is determined primarily by their H-index, a well-established metric that reflects both productivity and citation impact within the scientific community.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
For this edition, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles were identified and examined, encompassing all major scientific disciplines. These profiles were compiled from a diverse array of bibliometric sources, ensuring a broad and representative dataset across fields. To qualify, scientists had to meet specific H-index thresholds which varied by research area, typically set at 30 or 40. Beyond bibliometrics, scientists’ awards and notable achievements within their respective fields were also factored into the evaluation process to acknowledge broader indicators of scholarly excellence.
Ultimately, the ranking presents the top 1,000 scientists with the highest H-index scores, reflecting those rising stars who have demonstrated outstanding early impact and promise within Ireland’s scientific landscape.
Verification and Methodological Rigor
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the quality and impact of a researcher’s contributions. Consequently, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent thorough manual verification. This process involved cross-correlating publication records across numerous trustworthy sources to confirm the accuracy and integrity of the data.
Although not a direct factor in determining ranking position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and high-profile conference proceedings serves as an important secondary indicator of scientific contribution. This complementary information provides valuable context for assessing a researcher’s influence within their field.
The ranking’s foundation rests on information sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, among the most respected and widely accessed bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
