Data Sources and Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Rising Stars of Science in Colombia Ranking is constructed primarily using extensive bibliometric data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other highly reputable sources. These databases represent some of the most comprehensive and accessible repositories of scholarly publications and citations, allowing for a robust and broad assessment of scientific impact. To maintain a focus on emerging talent, only scientists whose earliest publication dates back 12 years or less were eligible for consideration. The bibliometric data underpinning the citation-based metrics for this ranking were meticulously collected on January 12, 2026. A researcher’s position within the ranking is determined by their H-index, a widely recognized metric that balances productivity with citation impact, providing a meaningful measure of scholarly influence.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
Our ranking is grounded in a comprehensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a diverse range of bibliometric data sources, encompassing all major scientific disciplines. To ensure disciplinary relevance and rigor, the qualifying H-index thresholds for inclusion were adjusted according to specific research areas, generally set at 30 or 40, reflective of the typical impact levels within those fields. Beyond citation metrics, the ranking also integrates consideration of each scientist’s awards and significant achievements in their respective domains, further validating their contribution to the advancement of science. Ultimately, only the top 1,000 scientists who demonstrate the highest H-index within these criteria are featured in the final ranking.
Verification and Quality Assurance
We recognize that raw bibliometric data alone cannot comprehensively evaluate the scholarly output of researchers. In response, an additional layer of manual verification was implemented. Each scientist’s profile was thoroughly cross-checked against publications documented in a wide array of trustworthy academic sources to ensure accuracy and integrity. While the number of publications in prestigious journals and conference proceedings is not a direct determinant of ranking position, it remains an important secondary indicator of a researcher’s influence and contribution to their field. The ranking’s primary basis continues to be the H-index calculated from data aggregated via OpenAlex and CrossRef, widely acknowledged for their reliability and prominence within the research community.
