Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Microbiology Scientists in Iran Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple other reputable databases. The citation data underlying the ranking metrics were meticulously collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring currency and relevance of the analysis. The position of each scientist in the ranking is determined by their Discipline H-index, commonly referred to as the D-index. This metric specifically considers only the publications and citations related to the examined discipline—Microbiology in this case—thereby providing a precise evaluation of a researcher’s impact within their specialized field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
To construct this ranking, a total of 187,659 scientist profiles extracted from a diverse array of bibliometric sources across all academic disciplines were examined, with 5 scientists identified specifically in the Microbiology domain in Iran. Candidates qualified for inclusion in the ranking by meeting a minimum D-index threshold of 40. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications had to be concentrated within the field of Microbiology. Award recognitions and notable achievements within the discipline also formed an integral part of the evaluation process.
The D-index threshold for considering top researchers is dynamically set with increments of 10, corresponding to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline; this strategy ensures the inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. Furthermore, to maintain discipline-specific relevance, the acceptable difference between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index is capped at 30% or less, affirming a strong focus in their research contributions.
Verification and Validation Procedures
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data should never serve as an absolute indicator of scholarly output, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent manual verification by the research team. Profiles were cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide spectrum of trustworthy scientific databases to confirm authenticity and relevance.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings was not factored directly into the ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary signal reflecting a scientist’s contribution to advancing knowledge within Microbiology. The final ranking is anchored on the rigorously computed D-index, leveraging data from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most respected and widely accessible bibliometric repositories in the global research community.
